Eating Disorder Therapist in Berkeley, California
I provide specialized eating disorder therapy in Berkeley, California, for adolescents and adults struggling with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, muscle dysmorphia, and body image concerns. I also offer telehealth therapy throughout California and New York.
Eating disorders take an enormous toll on physical health, emotional wellbeing, and daily life. Fortunately, they are highly responsive to treatment when care addresses not only eating behaviors, but also the psychological and relational factors that sustain them. With the right support, it is possible to move beyond constant preoccupation with food, weight, and shape and to experience greater freedom and ease in your life.
Specialized Expertise in Eating Disorder Treatment
Because eating disorders are serious and often life-threatening illnesses, it is essential to work with a therapist who has advanced training and experience in this area.
I am a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist – Consultant (CEDS-C), a credential awarded by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) to clinicians who have demonstrated a high level of competence, experience, and ethical practice in eating disorder treatment. I am currently one of the few psychologists in the Bay Area to hold this distinction.
I work with individuals of all genders and across the lifespan, including adolescents, young adults, and adults.
My clinical experience includes treatment of:
-
Anorexia nervosa
-
Bulimia nervosa
-
Binge eating disorder
-
Muscle dysmorphia
-
Chronic dieting and disordered eating
-
Body image distress and shape/weight preoccupation
My Approach to Eating Disorder Therapy
My approach to eating disorder therapy is psychodynamically and relationally informed, while remaining attentive to behavioral and medical realities. Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, treatment aims to understand how disordered eating functions psychologically and relationally, and how it has become a way of managing emotional states, identity, and control.
Therapy often includes:
-
Careful attention to the meanings food, weight, and the body hold for you
-
Support in addressing restrictive, bingeing, or purging behaviors safely
-
Exploration of underlying emotional conflicts and developmental history
-
Attention to shame, secrecy, and self-criticism
-
Collaboration with other providers as needed
I work closely with nutritionists, psychiatrists, and physicians to ensure coordinated, holistic care, particularly when medical or nutritional stabilization is required.
Professional Leadership, Writing, and Teaching
In addition to my clinical practice, I am actively involved in research, writing, and professional education related to eating disorders.
I am the author of Eating Disorders: A Contemporary Introduction and Understanding Anorexia Nervosa in Males: An Integrative Approach, and the editor of Psychoanalytic Treatment of Eating Disorders: When Words Fail and Bodies Speak. I have published widely in professional journals and speak nationally and internationally on eating disorders and psychotherapy.
I have been quoted or featured in outlets including Newsweek, WebMD, Slate, Yahoo Health, and National Post, and have appeared on podcasts and radio programs such as ED Matters, Understanding Disordered Eating, IPA Off the Couch, and Psych Up Live. I formerly served as an Executive Director at the National Association for Males with Eating Disorders.
I also provide consultation and supervision to clinicians seeking specialized training in eating disorder treatment.
